Cricket Matches | Can't compare Sachin with Don: Dhoni

Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that he doesn't like any comparisons between batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and the legendary Don Bradman.

"I do not like comparisons between Sachin and Don as they played in different eras," Dhoni was quoted as saying by the Beeld on Thursday.

"There is no doubt that both are brilliant batsmen and...but Sachin has been around for two decades...the best in the world and had moreover throughout his career could adapt even with the demands of one-day cricket and more recently the Twenty20 version," he said.

Dhoni said Sachin's presence brings out the best in the team.

"He is the kind of guy who get the best out of with whoever he bats," said Dhoni.

"I was on the other side when he struck that 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior," Dhoni said.

Sachin is the leading run maker with 14,513 runs in 175 Tests and 17,598 in 442 One-day Internationals. He recently completed 50 centuries in Tests at the Super Sport Park in the first Test against South Africa at Centurion.

Bradman, who passed away in 2001, holds the record of the best batting average of 99.94 in Tests.

IPL 4 player auction to have 416 cricketers ( IPLT20 )

The Indian Premier League will go on as promised after all and will have ten teams. This will mean that there will be 74 games in the tournament and the player auction will take place on January 8 and 9.

Out of the top players' bracketThe BCCI also announced a list of players that would be a part of the auction along with their reserve price. There were 416 players who would take part in the auctions from around the world and some of them were named in the highest bracket of reserve price at $400,000.
Continues to be a part of the Rajasthan Royals side

There were earlier 12 players who were directly selected by their teams. These included the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard and Lasith Malinga (all Mumbai), Virat Kohli (Bangalore), Shane Watson and Shane Warne (Rajasthan), Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Murali Vijay, Albie Morkel (Chennai) and Virender Sehwag (Delhi).

Off those put back into the auction pool, there were the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan.

Amongst those with the highest reserve price were Brian Lara, Dravid, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Kevin Pietersen and Yuvraj.

There was no place for any Pakistani cricketer after the Board decided not to have them over for the tournament after a year of flip-flops. Similarly, Mitchell Johnson, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting also find themselves out of the list, as do Matthew Hayden and Glen McGrath.

Amongst those in the $300,000 bracket are, Jacques Kallis, Muttiah Muralitharan, Zaheer Khan, Yusuf Pathan, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Tait, Kumar Sangakkara, and Angelo Mathews.

Rather surprisingly, Sourav Ganguly is a part of the auctions with a base price of $200,000 only apart from Gambhir and Doug Bollinger. Tamim Iqbal comes in $100,000 along with R Ashwin.

The fourth edition of the IPL will start from April 8 and will have ten teams play 74 games as was decided earlier.

ICC ranking: Sachin closes in on top spot

Sachin Tendulkar has closed the gap on Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to just two ratings points at the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Rankings following his 50th Test century in the Centurion Test which finished on Monday.

According to an ICC release, Tendulkar is on 880 points to Sangakkara’s 882 points while Jacques Kallis has moved up to third spot courtesy his double hundred against India at the Centurion.

Dashing Indian opener Virender Sehwag dropped a place down to fourth. However apart from V.V.S. Laxman who is 15th in the list, no other Indian player features in the list of top-20 batsmen.

Mike Hussey has made the most significant strides with his matchwinning effort at Perth as he gained eight places to be at sixth position.

However in list of Test bowlers, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh are placed seventh and tenth respectively. But both the senior Indian bowlers have dropped three and two places in the rankings list. Ishant Sharma is the other Indian bowler who has held on to his 15th position among the top-20.

Dale Steyn and Graeme Swann continue as the top two in the Bowlers’ list followed by Morne Morkel and Mitchell Johnson both of whom have up come up three places from their earlier rank to be third and fourth respectively.
James Anderson and tainted Pakistani pacer Mohammed Asif are at fifth and sixth positions respectively.

IPL4: VVS, Gilly not in Deccan's plans

So now it's business time once again! IPL players' auction is round the corner and just like other teams, Deccan Chargers, too, are rolling their sleeves up to battle in the players' market. And since it is already confirmed that the big-hitting Adam Gilchirst is making his way out of the Hyderabad-based side, the options available for the 2009 champions make for an interesting reading.

Gilchrist, one of the best in the 'cricketing business', took the team's reins from VVS Laxman after the side had a disastrous inaugural season where it finished at the bottom of the points table. The swashbuckling Aussie not only brought immediate results in the next edition, but also enthused the spirit that was missing in the first season.

Though, touted as underdogs in the 2009 event, which was shifted to South Africa, Gilchrist, with good support from his former Aussie teammate Andrew Symonds and other Indian players took everyone by surprise by clinching the cash-rich event.

But since the left-hander has already made up his mind to look for other opportunities, it is interesting to notice the places he may go to.

It's already in the air that the new entrant, Pune Warriors, could take the services of the 38-year-old as he has got the perfect credence to lead the side. And with good players, decent support staff and owner's backing, he could definitely help the Sahara group-owned side to set off to a flier.

There is also a strong possibility that Kolkata Knight Riders, could rope in the experienced player, as Shah Rukh Khan and other co-owners are looking for a breath of fresh air, especially after the disappointment of the first three seasons, where it performed much below everyone's expectations.
If Sourav Ganguly — the present captain of KKR — leaves the Kolkata side, which very much seems to be on the cards, then Gilchrist could be the right person that coach Dav Whatmore and his team would like to work with.

And as the date — December 8 — to retain the four marquee players by each team is approaching, only Andrew Symonds and Kemar Roach are certain to have a long run for the Deccan side.

There is no chance that Herschelle Gibbs, who has been in the news lately more for his controversial book than his cricketing credentials, will be retained. It is also certain that Chaminda Vass, who is over 36 years of age, will make the cut. West Indian Dwayne Smith had already got an extended spell with the franchise, so it is unlikely that he would be a part of the set up this time.

Two other Australians, young Mitchell Marsh and pacer Ryan Harris who were impressive with the limited outings they got, are not the best bargains with the amount of money at stake.

Since maximum of only three Indian players can be retained by a franchise, for most of the players, it's a battle of survival as few may just not be picked by the same side or may be by any.

The most interesting case will be of VVS Laxman. The stylish Hyderabadi batsman has been on a roll — playing vital innings and scoring tons of runs — in the longest version of the game. But still many find him slow for the fast-pace cricket. His ground fielding, except standing in slips, has always been under the scanner.
And though it would be difficult to fill Gilchrist's shoes but another Australian, who is as competent as the left hander, Shane Warne could be the perfect replacement for the wicket-keeper batsman. The former Aussie great had a dream inaugural season with the Rajasthan Royals, helping them winning the trophy in 2008.

However, his availability will depend on whether the Jaipur-based team gets the chance to participate in the next edition. But if things go according to the BCCI's plan then Warne could well be in Deccan's dug out next season.

Warne's teammates in Rajasthan, Shane Watson and Yusuf Pathan, could also be the lucky one if being selected for the Chargers. Same holds true for Kings XI Punjab's Sri Lankan veterans, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. The two Sri Lankans are looking certain to leave the Mohali side, especially after the dreadful outing they had in the last three years.

So the stage is set and the players are ready to be under the hammer and now everything depends on how quickly Deccan charges itself up to make a move in the players' auction.

Lara, Gilly in top bracket for IPL auction

Former West Indies great Brian Lara, dashing Australian batsman Adam Gilchrist and hard-hitting Chris Gayle are among the overseas players who have been put in the top price bracket for the January 8 and 9 players' auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League(IPL).

Around 400 foreign players have expressed their willingness to be a part of the cash-rich event. They have been classified in six brackets ranging from $20,000 to $400,000.

Defending World T20 champions England have six players - Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright and Michael Yardy - in top bracket. New Zealand have their skipper Daniel Vettori, deputy Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum in the top rung.

The Australians have only three players - Shaun Marsh, Gilchrist and Brett Lee - in the top bracket base price. The Hussey brothers Mike and David are in the second base price bracket of $300,000, while T20 and ODI specialist David Warner is in the third bracket with a base price of $200,000.

It is also learnt that, Mitchell Johnson, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting's names did not figure in the list that the IPL governing council had sent to the franchisees.

Surprisingly, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara is missing from the top group as only two Sri Lankans - Mahela Jayawardene and TM Dilshan - have found place. South African captain Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers are in the elite group as well.

There are however no Bangaldeshis in the top bracket as Shakib Al-Hasan gets the highest base price of $200,000, while Mohammed Ashraful and Tamim Iqbal have base prices of $50,000 and 100,000 respectively.

Top Bracket Base Price ($400,000)
  • England: Kevin Pietersen, James Anderson, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy
  • New Zealand: Daniel Vettori, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum
  • Australia: Adam Gilchrist, Shaun Marsh, Brett Lee
  • South Africa: Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers.
  • Sri Lanka: TM Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene
  • West Indies: Chris Gayle, Brian Lara

India announce a 30 man preliminary squad for 2011 World Cup

The Indian cricket board Saturday announced a 30-member squad, sans former captain Rahul Dravid and fast bowler Irfan Pathan, for the World Cup that would be held in the sub-continent from Feb 19.

The 37-year-old Dravid, who led the team in the last World Cup, last played in an ODI in 2009 September against the West Indies in the Champions Trophy in South Africa. Irfan has also lost his form and his last ODI was against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009.

Irfan's senior brother Yusuf, however, was among the probables along with wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who made his comeback in international cricket last month against New Zealand after six years.

Chief selector Kris Srikkanth said the team would perform well in the World Cup.

'As you know there are no big surprises. This is a probables team and everyone selects himself. There is one more month to go to select the final team and we will sit down and think calmly before finalising the team,' Srikkanth told reporters here after the meeting.

'I am confident that the team will do well in the World Cup. They have been doing well in one-day cricket. The World Cup is happening in the sub-continent and I am confident that the team will do well,' he said.

Cricket Update: Harbhajan hopes to fight on as South Africa tear through Indian batting in Centurion

The South Africans have got off to a dream start in the Centurion test as they tore through the much vaunted Indian batting line up on day one of the eagerly awaited series that is being touted as the battle for the number one spot in test match cricket.
The much vaunted Indian batting line up was blown away by the pace and swing of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Jacques Kallis on a wicket that offered seam movement especially after heavy rain in the morning of the match freshened up a lively track even further.
The hosts won the toss and never looked back and at the end of a curtailed day had reduced Mahindra Singh Dhoni’s men to an abysmal 136/9.
Even reaching the 100 mark looked tough at a time when the top order was sent packing reducing the tourists to 70 odd of six wickets.
The Indian captain who held firm in the closing stages of the day had an able ally in Harbhajan Singh, who before his mindless run out had scored 27 runs off 25 balls with the aid of some lusty blows.
After the day’s play, Harbhajan stated that the wicket was an extremely demanding one especially after being forced to bat.
"We were quite prepared to play on a good track, but unfortunately with the rain and stuff it was quite a damp wicket," he said. "The toss was very crucial to this match. We lost the toss. They bowled well in the given conditions, and they got the rewards. If we had won the toss, I think we would have done the same thing. We would have bowled first, then who knows what would have happened."
The turbanator dispelled the impression that the wicket would stay the same for the rest of the match; he claimed that taking wickets would be really tough for his team once the pitch settles down which he expects would happen as early as the second day.
He also stated that even a warm up match would not have helped his team much, especially as the wicket would have been different to the one they have been asked to play the test on.
"I don't know how long it will help the seamers," he said. "But definitely there is a lot of movement after pitching, swinging and cutting both ways, because it is damp. If we get the sun tomorrow, obviously it will play a lot better than it did today. That's what I think. I could be wrong.”
He further went on to say that they are playing on a wet wicket where the ball is seaming or nipping. A warm-up game would have been on a perfect cricketing wicket. They can't complain about wickets and need to make sure they come back into the game.
The task is cut out for the Indians when they come out to resume their innings tomorrow; firstly, they have to hope for a real rearguard action from their skipper Dhoni who is at the crease with last man debutant Jaidev Unadkat.
Secondly they have to make inroads into the South African batting line-up almost immediately as in all likelihood they are not going to add more than 25 runs to their current total barring a miraculous stand for the last wicket.
Another negative that they are facing in the match is the absence of their regular wicket taker Zaheer Khan, who has remained their leading wicket taker in recent years and has troubled the best in the business with his late swing and pace.
They are in desperate trouble already and the test is only a day old.

India in dire straits against South Africa

Centurion: South African fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel ripped apart the Indian batting on the rain-affected opening day of the first cricket Test here Thursday.

Steyn (3/34) and Morkel (4/20) reveled in helpful conditions as India were left struggling at 136 for nine in the first innings after just 38.1 overs of play was possible, before bad light stopped play at the Super Sport Park.

Indian batsmen failed to get the measure of the track and at the close of play, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was batting on 33 in the company of debutant Jaydev Unadkat, who was on one.

After a delayed start of nearly four hours, India, who were asked to bat first, made a disastrous start with opener Virender Sehwag departing in the third over of the day, without opening his account, when he chased Dale Steyn's away going delivery and Hashim Amla took an easy catch at third man boundary.

Gautam Gambhir (5) was also scrappy and was dismissed by Morkel in the 13th over. Morkel again struck in his next over, trapping Rahul Dravid (14) leg before for his 100th wicket in 29th Test.

Sachin Tendulkar (36) and V.V.S. Laxman (7) took India to tea at 55 for three. Tendulkar (36) was the only batsmen, who could score freely on both sides of the wicket and pulled Lonwabo Tsotsobe twice for fours and again drove the left-arm fast bowler through the covers for another boundary.

Tendulkar hit eight boundaries in his 34 ball cameo and was trapped leg before the wicket by Steyn as wickets started tumbling again in the final session.

Laxman was castled by Steyn after he tried to work a straight delivery to midwicket and Suresh Raina (1) edged his third ball from Jacques Kallis to Ashwell Prince at third slip.

Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh (27) came up with a crucial 39-ball stand off 45 balls that helped India cross the 100-mark. Harbhajan, who scored back-to-back centuries last month in the Test series against New Zealand, was run out with an excellent piece of work from wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

World Cup 2011: Is busy India taking a risk?

With India's packed tour of South Africa set to start and end just 26 days before the game's biggest tournament begins, one wonders if all this cricket this year could be counter-productive to Team India's preparations for the coveted 2011 World Cup.

In terms of the sheer volume of cricket being played every year, India have already played the most amount of cricket, surpassing, as they do almost every year, every other team competing in the World Cup.

Some critics have long claimed that there is too much cricket being played, while other experts maintain that cricketers should be fit enough and teams ought to be smart enough with their player rotation to cope and deal with the lengthy calendar.
