Opening Ceremony Of Icc Cricket World Cup 2011

The president of the International Cricket Council Sharad Pawar today surprised everyone as he delivered the introductory lines of his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the World Cup in Bengali.

"Swagato (Welcome)," Pawar said at the Bangabandhu Stadium. "Bangladesh khoobi sundor desh (Bangladesh is a beautiful country)," the Indian Union Minister of Agriculture stated amid thunderous applause from a sell-out crowd.

"This will be a World Cup which everyone will remember," Pawar said.

"I have been associated with two World Cup opening ceremonies but this was organised on a grand scale."

Pawar thanked Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government of India for their support. He also thanked BCCI president Shashank Manohar and his Sri Lankan counterpart DS de Silva for their support.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the biggest cheer during the opening round of speeches but she made a faux pas while announcing the tournament open in Bengali.

She initially said "Biswa Cup Du Hajar Ek" (which means World Cup 2001) but later corrected when she declared the tournament open in English.

Jacques Kallis hit his second century of the match to put South Africa on top on the fourth day of the series-deciding third and final Test against India at Newlands on Wednesday. He made 109 not out as South Africa recovered from a precarious 130 for six to be all out for 341 off the last ball of the day - leaving India with the near impossible task of scoring 340 to win on a wearing pitch on which uneven bounce could make batting difficult on the final day. The innings took Kallis into second place on the all-time list of Test centurions. It was his 40th hundred, one more than Ricky Ponting of Australia and 11 fewer than India's Sachin Tendulkar. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had took the last two wickets to finish with seven for 120. Full  Score Board

Cricket Matches | Can't compare Sachin with Don: Dhoni

Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that he doesn't like any comparisons between batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and the legendary Don Bradman.

"I do not like comparisons between Sachin and Don as they played in different eras," Dhoni was quoted as saying by the Beeld on Thursday.

"There is no doubt that both are brilliant batsmen and...but Sachin has been around for two decades...the best in the world and had moreover throughout his career could adapt even with the demands of one-day cricket and more recently the Twenty20 version," he said.

Dhoni said Sachin's presence brings out the best in the team.

"He is the kind of guy who get the best out of with whoever he bats," said Dhoni.

"I was on the other side when he struck that 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior," Dhoni said.

Sachin is the leading run maker with 14,513 runs in 175 Tests and 17,598 in 442 One-day Internationals. He recently completed 50 centuries in Tests at the Super Sport Park in the first Test against South Africa at Centurion.

Bradman, who passed away in 2001, holds the record of the best batting average of 99.94 in Tests.

ICC CWC : Ganguly hopeful about India's chances at 2011 World Cup

ICC CWC : Ganguly hopeful about India's chances at 2011 World Cup, Icc Cricket World Cup Match

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly said he is hopeful the recently announced Indian squad would win the forthcoming World Cup.
Interacting with mediapersons here on Thursday, Ganguly said that seeing the performance of Indian players at home ground, a victory in the World Cup could be expected.
"I am very hopeful. India is a very strong One Day International (ODI) team and they are playing it at home. If they can handle the pressure of the people at home, they'll be at the side who can win the World Cup," said Ganguly.
He further remarked that the team's performance in the first test against South Africa was disappointing but he was optimistic of the second test in Durban.
"Nobody wants to lose, am sure none of us, none of the players, or the team, or the supporters would be happy with the loss. But it can happen. You can win some game, you can lose some game, and am sure they will bounce back in the next tour... obviously toss will be important," said Ganguly.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: Probable semi-finalists | Watch Live Cricket Match |

With the 2011 World Cup around the corner, speculation on the probable champions has started to rise. Australia has dominated the competition for a long time winning the Cup 3 consecutive times, in 1999, 2003 and 2007. This time, however, many fear that the 4-time World Cup winners will face a much stiffer challenge to reclaim the title.

An interesting fact to notice is that in all their previous three wins, Australia has faced the three Asian giants in the final. 1999 was the year when Wasim Akram’s Pakistan failed miserably after scoring just 132 runs in the final. The 2003 final saw Indian bowlers being smashed to all parts of the ground in South Africa. In 2007, Sri Lanka were hoping to replicate their 1996 World Cup win but failed.

Another stat regarding Asian teams in the tournament is that in the previous 5 ICC World Cups, there has been an Asian team in the Final. In 1992, Pakistan won their only ODI World Cup under the influential captaincy of Imran Khan. In the following 1996 competition, Sri Lanka beat Australia in the final at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore Pakistan.

Considering the fact that the 2011 World Cup is being played in Asia, the three mighty Asian teams have a good chance of winning the tournament. The list of for probable semi-finalists, however, is easily topped by India.

1. India: One of the greatest batsmen of all time, Sir Viv Richards, has labelled India as the favourites for the 2011 tournament. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India has developed a formidable team which will be difficult to beat on home soil. A batting line up which includes the little master Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yousaf Pathan, Dhoni and the inform Virat Kohli, can demolish any bowling attack. Perhaps the only worry the Indian camp has is the lack of pace in their bowling attack which is held together by only Zaheer Khan.

2. Australia: Australia might not be as strong a team as they were a couple of years back, nonetheless, it is still hard to rule out a team which has made it to the final in the previous four attempts. The Kangaroos have managed to reach the final of the World Cup 6 times in the 9 tournaments held so far. As a Captain, Ricky Ponting has a remarkable 100% record in the competition. Australia have won all 22 matches played under his leadership. Their experience in the tournament is bound to come in handy even with this less high profile team.

3. Sri Lanka: This will be spin-wizard Muttiah Muralitharan’s final World Cup outing and he will surely be looking to end his illustrious ODI career on a high. On World Cup pitches, which are expected to support spin bowling, Murali’s magic can single-handedly win games for Sri Lanka. He will be supported by the Lasith Malinga in the bowling department, who will be looking to exploit batsmen with his reverse swing. The batting will be anchored by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene and players like Tillakaratne Dilshan will look to impose themselves on the opposition.

4. Pakistan: Most people will be surprised to see this name in the list as Pakistan has failed to secure an ODI series win since 2008. However, given the fact that the World Cup will be played in conditions similar to Pakistan, this unpredictable team has the ability to cause an upset. With players like captain Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar, who can win matches single-handedly, Pakistan can go on to win their second World Cup title.

ICC ranking: Sachin closes in on top spot

Sachin Tendulkar has closed the gap on Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to just two ratings points at the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Rankings following his 50th Test century in the Centurion Test which finished on Monday.

According to an ICC release, Tendulkar is on 880 points to Sangakkara’s 882 points while Jacques Kallis has moved up to third spot courtesy his double hundred against India at the Centurion.

Dashing Indian opener Virender Sehwag dropped a place down to fourth. However apart from V.V.S. Laxman who is 15th in the list, no other Indian player features in the list of top-20 batsmen.

Mike Hussey has made the most significant strides with his matchwinning effort at Perth as he gained eight places to be at sixth position.

However in list of Test bowlers, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh are placed seventh and tenth respectively. But both the senior Indian bowlers have dropped three and two places in the rankings list. Ishant Sharma is the other Indian bowler who has held on to his 15th position among the top-20.

Dale Steyn and Graeme Swann continue as the top two in the Bowlers’ list followed by Morne Morkel and Mitchell Johnson both of whom have up come up three places from their earlier rank to be third and fourth respectively.
James Anderson and tainted Pakistani pacer Mohammed Asif are at fifth and sixth positions respectively.
