West Indies announces its preliminary squad for 2011 World Cup
Six uncapped Caribbean cricketers have been offered the opportunity to prove their worth ahead of February’s World Cup event after being named in West Indies’ 30-man preliminary squad for the esteemed tournament announced on Tuesday. The uncapped names include two batsmen, Kirk Edwards and Jonathan Carter, fast bowler Jason Holder and two leg-spinners Anthony Martin and Devendra Bishoo.
The West Indies Cricket Board has not yet announced the captain for the 2011 ICC World Cup which would be jointly hosted by three subcontinent nations, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Former West Indies skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan and the wicketkeeper batsman Denesh Ramdin, who were dropped from the recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka have also been recalled to the squad. The squad would be reduced to 15 names by the 19th of next month.
Fast bowlers Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards, who have just returned to the game after recovering from enduring injuries failed to get a spot in the preliminary squad. The only centrally contracted player left out of the mix is the 33-year-old Australia born Brendan Nash.
The West Indies cricket team, are going through the rough run these days, they won the 1975 and 1979 World Cup's and were the runners up during the 1983 Cricket World Cup which was held in England.
The holders of two World Cup titles have been Placed in Group B which also includes England, India, Bangladesh, South Africa, Netherlands and Ireland. The team will play two warm-up matches against Kenya and Sri Lanka before formally begining their World Cup campaign in Delhi on the 25th of February and will conclude their pool games against India on March 20th in Chennai.
The squad would be trimmed to 15 men by the 19th of January. The boards were required by the ICC to submit their preliminary squads by the 19th of December but the deadline was extended to the 5th of next month on request of some participating boards.
