Opening Ceremony Of Icc Cricket World Cup 2011

The president of the International Cricket Council Sharad Pawar today surprised everyone as he delivered the introductory lines of his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the World Cup in Bengali.

"Swagato (Welcome)," Pawar said at the Bangabandhu Stadium. "Bangladesh khoobi sundor desh (Bangladesh is a beautiful country)," the Indian Union Minister of Agriculture stated amid thunderous applause from a sell-out crowd.

"This will be a World Cup which everyone will remember," Pawar said.

"I have been associated with two World Cup opening ceremonies but this was organised on a grand scale."

Pawar thanked Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government of India for their support. He also thanked BCCI president Shashank Manohar and his Sri Lankan counterpart DS de Silva for their support.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the biggest cheer during the opening round of speeches but she made a faux pas while announcing the tournament open in Bengali.

The Indian cricket team has left here for Dhaka for the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup 2011 on Thursday. The squad, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, left Chennai International Airport with team members Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla, and S. Sreesanth.

India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are jointly hosting the 2011 ICC World Cup.

The opening match of the tournament will be played in Dhaka on February 19, in which India will take on Bangladesh.(ANI)

In their second warm-up match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, team India won by 117 runs against New Zealand. 

The Indian captain cracked three sixes and 11 fours in a 64-ball 108 not out to help his team post an imposing 360-5 and virtually bat New Zealand out of the day-night match in Chennai.
New Zealand were bowled out for 243 after a brisk 94-run stand for the opening wicket between Brendon McCullum (58) and Martin Guptill (38) to suffer their first defeat in two practice matches.

"It's a difficult task for any side when they have to chase six or seven runs an over. This is the way we should play all the time," said Harbhajan Singh, who took 2-17.

Gambhir hit 11 fours in his 85-ball stay while Kohli hit seven boundaries in a 68-ball innings.

India open their World Cup campaign against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday, while New Zealand take on Kenya in their first match the following day in Chennai.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday hoped Team India would win the cricket world cup.

Praveen Kumar ruled out of World Cup 2011

Indian fast bowler Praveen Kumar has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2011 due to injury (elbow).

According to the sources, Praveen has not fully recovered from his elbow injury, which is the prime reason to keep him out of the mega event.

Praveen had hurt his elbow during the practice session in South Africa & he has already missed the entire One-day series in South Africa due to a elbow injury. It is expected that Kerela pacer S Sreesanth will replace him in the side.

It will be major jolt to team India before the quadrilateral extravaganza, beginning from February 19 in Sub-Continent (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh). 

Praveen Kumar has been the key bowler for India and his ability to move bowl both ways might have been proved vital for India.

ICC team inspects Eden facilities, face black flag protests

KOLKATA: A group of cricket lovers waved black flags to protest the International Cricket Council (ICC) "robbing" the Eden Gardens of the India-England match, as a three-member team of the game's apex body inspected the ground's facilities Monday to see if it was fit to host the remaining three World Cup matches next month.

"We have shown them all the facilities. They have seen the whole ground," Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Biswarup Dey told newspersons after the team's three-hour inspection.

Asked whether the ICC delegation was satisfied, Dey avoided a direct reply.

"I cannot say that because they have not said so far," he said.

The ICC team arrived around 9.50 a.m. and went around the ground, the two new galleries, the dressing rooms, some corporate boxes, and other parts of the premises.

CAB sources said the team spent a lot of time inspecting the sight screens.

As the ICC team was making a tour of the Eden Gardens, about 50 cricket lovers waved black flags, accusing the ICC of having taken away the Feb 27 match between India and England fromthe Eden. This, they alleged, was done at the behest of ICC president Sharad Pawar who has had a long-standing rivalry with CAB chief Jagmohan Dalmiya in Indian cricket board politics.

"ICC go back. Down Down, ICC. They took the unfair decision to please their boss Pawar," said a youth, who was part of the demonstration orgnanised under the banner of the Maidan Sports Lovers' Association.

A section of CAB officials, however, expressed apprehension that the uncovered roof on the two newly built galleries could still be a bone of contention with the ICC late last month asking the local association to complete the roof construction before the venue can be given clearance for the three games. The CAB has already told the ICC that it was not possible to complete the roof.

As per a timeline given by the ICC, part of the work has to be completed by Monday, some more part by Feb 14 and the entire work schedule by Feb 22.

The ICC Jan 27 ruled the Eden Gardens unsuitable for the Feb 27 tie following an adverse report form its inspection team.

Following an appeal from CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya, Board of Control for Cricket in India chief Shashank Manohar requested ICC to consider the demand, but the international body turned it down.

The Eden Gardens is now slated to host South Africa vs. Ireland (March 15), the Netherlands vs. Ireland (March 18), and Zimbabwe vs. Kenya (March 20). The Feb 27 India-England match has been shifted to Bangalore.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced Afridi as the captain for the World Cup on Friday. Misbah-ul-Haq will be the Voice Caption of Pakistan Team in the Cricket World Cup 2011. These announcement have came just after Pakistan team won the ODI series against New Zealand.

Note: Pakistan was the only team which did not name its captain while announcing the 15-member squad.
