Dravid makes shock comeback to India's ODI squad

Rahul Dravid
Bangalore, August 6 (Yahoo! Cricket): Former India captain Rahul Dravid was the surprise inclusion in India's 16-man squad for the one-off Twenty20 international and the five-match one-day international series that will follow the Test series against England.

Dravid, who has scored 10765 runs at an average of 39.43 in 339 ODIs, last turned out for India in colored clothing during the Champions Trophy in South Africa in 2009. The experienced batsman has been the best Indian batsman on show in the first two Tests even as the rest of the famed batting line-up has struggled to cope with the seaming conditions in England, and this could probably be the reason Dravid has been included in the ODI squad by the selection committee headed by former skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

As expected, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh have been excluded because of injuries the pair sustained during India's humiliating 319-run defeat at Trent Bridge to go down 0-2 in the four-Test series and are out of action for four and three weeks respectively. While Yuvraj hasn't played an ODI since being named Man of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup; Harbhajan has been far below his best in West Indies as well as England.

Swashbuckling opening batsman Virender Sehwag, who has recently regained fitness after his shoulder surgery in May, has been named vice-captain of the limited overs squads.

T20 & ODI Team Squad: MS Dhoni (capt and wk), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Parthiv Patel (wk), Amit Mishra, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar.

Tendulkar, Sehwag in ICC shortlist for all-time greatest ODI team

Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, along with Virender Sehwag, today found a place in the list of players nominated for an ICC online poll to pick the all—time greatest team as part of one—day cricket’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The retired Sourav Ganguly is also part of the list of openers, from which only two would make the final dream team.

“To mark the 40th anniversary of One-Day International cricket, the ICC’s official website is asking supporters from across the globe to select their choice of the greatest ODI match and team of all-time,” the ICC said in a statement.
Website www.icc-cricket.com is asking supporters to select a dream team from a shortlist of 48 players and pick their favourite game from a choice of 10 memorable matches.

Fans can select dream team and favourite game till January 2, with the choices set to be announced on January 5 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the first-ever ODI match between Australia and England.

“With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 now less than two months away, excitement and interest in the one-day format of the game will certainly intensify. We know that fans will enjoy having the chance to remember some of the great games and great players that have played in ODI cricket during the past 40 years,” ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said.

The Australian ODI team from 1971 will also be presented to the crowd during the innings break of the first ODI match of the series between Australia and England at the MCG on January 16.

In the nominees for the Greatest ODI team of all time, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the lone Indian in the list of wicketkeepers.

However, no Indian has found a place in the list of middle-order batsmen and fast bowlers, while the legendary Kapil Dev has found a mention in the all-rounders’ nomination.

Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have made the list of spinners shortlisted for the dream team.

Two India match (the win over West Indies by 43 runs at Lord’s, 25 June 1983 and the triumph against Pakistan by five runs at Karachi, 13 March 2004) are there in the list of nominees for the greatest ODI match.

    The shortlist for Dream Team:

Opening batsmen (2) — Saeed Anwar, Sourav Ganguly, Gordon Greenidge, Matthew Hayden, Sanath Jayasuriya, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Glenn Turner.

Middleorder batsmen (3) — Michael Bevan, Martin Crowe, Aravinda de Silva, Inzamam—ul Haq, Brian Lara, Javed Miandad, Ricky Ponting, Viv Richards.

All—rounder (1) — Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Andrew Flintoff, Richard Hadlee, Jacques Kallis, Imran Khan, Lance Klusener, Shaun Pollock.

Wicketkeeper (1) — Mark Boucher, MS Dhoni, Andy Flower Adam Gilchrist, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Moin Khan, Alec Stewart, Kumar Sangakkara.

Fast bowlers (3) — Wasim Akram, Allan Donald, Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, Chaminda Vaas, Waqar Younis.

Spinners (1) — Shahid Afridi, Carl Hooper, Anil Kumble, Muttiah Muralitharan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Harbhajan Singh, Shane Warne, Daniel Vettori.

    Greatest ODI match of all—time:

West Indies beat Australia by 17 runs at Lord’s, 21 June 1975.

India beat West Indies by 43 runs at Lord’s, 25 June 1983.

England won by three wickets against Australia at Sydney, 22 January 1987.

Australia won by one—wicket against West Indies at Sydney, 12 January 1996.

Australia tied with South Africa at Edgbaston, 17 June 1999.

Pakistan tied with Sri Lanka, at Sharjah, 15 October 1999.

India beat Pakistan by five runs at Karachi, 13 March 2004.

Tendulkar returns to India's ODI squad against South Africa

If you needed a ready reckoner to figure out what the Indian cricket team for the 2011 World Cup would look like, just throw a glance at the squad named for the five-match One-Day International series against South Africa on Tuesday.

The 16-man ODI squad will also form the group for the one-off Twenty20 game.
While Sachin Tendulkar, fresh from a 11-month ODI lay-off makes an expected return, the selectors, headed by chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth, picked Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for what will be the last five ODI matches for the Indian team before the World Cup in the subcontinent from Feb 19.

Missing from the squad were Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma and Dhoni-clone Saurabh Tiwary. Chawla's inclusion meant that Ravinder Jadeja did not find a place, and it seems unlikely that his dreams of a World Cup spot would be fulfilled.

Wicketkeeper-bat Parthiv Patel may feel aggrieved after a good show against New Zealand, but a second stumper for the World Cup could be a luxury, considering the fact that the tourney is being played in the subcontinent and a replacement can be flown in immediately.

Keeping in view the series as a final World Cup preparation, Tendulkar, skipper MS Dhoni, opener Virender Sehwag and seasoned campaigner Harbhajan Singh all who had been rested from the five-match series against New Zealand at home recently, make their way back.

Man in dashing form Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and all-rounder Yusuf Pathan too have been given their appointed places.

The pace bowling section includes Zaheer Khan, backed by Sreesanth, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel. IPL-find off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin joins Harbhajan and Chawla in the spin-bowling club.

While Srikkanth refused to comment on the selection, sources said the choices were straight and there wasn't much to debate about. "The inclusion of an extra paceman and spinner in the side for the series in South Africa is to figure out the form and fitness of the bowlers," said one in the know of things.

India surely will not retain three spinners in the final 15 for the World Cup, and even one of the pacers may make way for a batsman or a couple to walk in. Rohit Sharma and Saurabh Tiwary hence, could still be considered later.

Team for T20 and ODI series in South Africa:
MS Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth.

India announce a 30 man preliminary squad for 2011 World Cup

The Indian cricket board Saturday announced a 30-member squad, sans former captain Rahul Dravid and fast bowler Irfan Pathan, for the World Cup that would be held in the sub-continent from Feb 19.

The 37-year-old Dravid, who led the team in the last World Cup, last played in an ODI in 2009 September against the West Indies in the Champions Trophy in South Africa. Irfan has also lost his form and his last ODI was against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009.

Irfan's senior brother Yusuf, however, was among the probables along with wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who made his comeback in international cricket last month against New Zealand after six years.

Chief selector Kris Srikkanth said the team would perform well in the World Cup.

'As you know there are no big surprises. This is a probables team and everyone selects himself. There is one more month to go to select the final team and we will sit down and think calmly before finalising the team,' Srikkanth told reporters here after the meeting.

'I am confident that the team will do well in the World Cup. They have been doing well in one-day cricket. The World Cup is happening in the sub-continent and I am confident that the team will do well,' he said.

The final 15-member squad would be announced next month.

The list of probables: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, S. Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Murali Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Saurav Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Parthiv Patel, R. Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, Cheteshwar Pujara, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar.
